Karl Robinson is Wynyard Wood’s expert insurance lawyer. Karl is experienced in bringing claims against insurers and resolving insurance disputes.
Karl joined the partnership at Wynyard Wood at Highbrook, East Auckland, in mid-2021. He has a strong insurance background with around 15 years of experience assisting both insurers and insureds by providing legal opinions on indemnity/declinature issues, bringing and defending claims both for and against insurers, and resolving insurance disputes.
After several years of general practice, in 2008 Karl began working at a highly regarded boutique specialist insurance litigation firm that is on the panel of many of the country’s leading insurers. There, Karl provided legal advice to insurers on indemnity issues and defended both insurers against challenges to indemnity and insureds against claims brought by third parties. His time working on the insurer side included a secondment at AIG.
In 2015 Karl joined the late, preeminent civil and insurance litigator, Andrew Hooker, at another specialist insurance litigation firm. In this role, Karl acted solely for plaintiffs and insureds who were in dispute with their insurer. Karl continued to provide legal advice on insurance issues such as declinatures but from the other side of the fence. He also represented insureds who were challenging their insurers’ decisions.
During his years specialising in New Zealand insurance law, Karl has gained particular experience with property and construction-related disputes bringing and defending claims against professionals involved in the building and construction industry. He has acted for many years in cases involving leaky buildings and later the Canterbury earthquakes. Karl is experienced in providing legal advice on most forms of insurance.
